Cottonwood is a difficult wood to turn and usually very bland. The dramatic color and figure in this piece comes from spalting. The piece is very lightweight and delicate. The cottonwood tree, which grows along rivers and creek beds, is strongly associated with water here in the Southwest and is considered sacred by the Hopi, who carve Kachina dolls from its roots and who believe that the gods speak to people through the rustle of the wind through the cottonwood's leaves.
