“Lightning”: Mesquite hollow vessel with turquoise fill, 8.38"

This heavy hollow vessel was turned from a piece of old-growth mesquite that appeared to have been hit by lightning. The rich figure on the top, extending below the rim in the area of the turquoise fill, underlay the seared portion of the wood. I love that the natural crack in the wood in this area, which I filled with turquoise inlay, looks like a lightning bolt itself. The top of the vessel is just slightly concave, with the lip just slightly above the level of the outer rim.
