Osage orange bowl, 6"

Osage orange is a common tree in the U.S. Midwest, so common and its wood so hardy that the wood is routinely used for things like fence posts, its brilliant beauty taken for granted. This bowl was turned while the wood was still somewhat wet, and it warped as it dried, to an oval shape. Also as it dried, the grain, which had been sanded smooth, rose, leaving gentle ripples that can be felt in the interior of the bowl. Please note that osage orange does brown with age, and its color has muted considerably since it was first made, when it was brilliant yellow.
