Aspen is normally a very plain white wood, but the log this piece came from had quite a bit of spalting on one sidealthough in this case the resulting discoloration was not black. Turned while the wood was still wet, the bowl warped as it dried, as is apparent in the bowl’s oval shape and the symmetrical high and low points on the rim. The wall is turned thin enough to be translucent. I was so taken with the soft appearance of the wood that I didn't have the heart to cover it with any finish, so the wood is bare. In keeping with its general aura of airiness, this piece is astonishingly light.
